Hello TCOP users! I try to summarize the skills that are focused about when teaching Early Grade Reading students
. You will understand what reading is. You will know the main skills to be focused on in reading and why are those skills important.
Reading goes together with writing; you understand that we have to put more effort for learners to know both. We need to build the following four skills of language
The following are the skills of reading.
1) skills about syllables,
2) skills about letters and reading them.
Skills about syllables refer to the ability of finding syllables and words in the speech (stories).
The skills about letters refer to the ability of knowing the different between letter names and their sounds
. Here you need to explain deeply to the learners that one letter should have its sound different from its name or one letter can perform the same sound like another. Read this example: CAT and CUT
Vocabularies refer to the ability of listening and understand each word read in the story (writing). Here you will use many techniques like vocabulary tree, list of words and many ways that improve learner’s vocabulary.
Reading fluently and effectively refers to which speed you are reading about by respecting signs of punctuation and following exclamation where necessary.
Listening skills refers to the ability of understanding and explain what you read. You can find someone reading but not understanding this why we need to help learners understand and explain what they read. We can do this by finding enough time for them telling others what they have read. They can also do summarization of what they have read from the story. Upon from the above a teacher is supposed to do whatever to improve learns language skills. Thanks
